Sons du Soleil uses as its sound source the sounds of solar wind as recorded by NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, a spacecraft engineered by Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in such a way that it has managed to get closer to the sun than any other spacecraft before it. “The spacecraft's FIELDS instrument can eavesdrop on the electric and magnetic fluctuations caused by plasma waves. It can also "hear" when the waves and particles interact with one another, recording frequency and amplitude information about these plasma waves that scientists can then play as sound waves.” (jhu).
I was able to download these acoustic files by courtesy of JHU APL. Some of the sounds I left as they occur naturally, others I processed to various degrees.
This work was created according to a brief by Jean-Paul Anderhub for his Project SunDea with a total solar eclipse in mind. It is a shorter version than was intended if J.P. Anderhub had lived to bring his huge project to fruition. This version was premiered at ductus gallery Lucerne, Switzerland on 27 Jan. 2023.**
The brief was to include bird sounds when the ‘scariness/darkness’ of the eclipse’s totality gives way again to the light. The bird sounds I recorded in Australia. In this 2nd section of the work, I also introduced some natural whale song by courtesy of Mark Francis Franklin.
